Pre-Crisis: An English crime-fighter who, along with his son Cyril, fought crime in England as the Knight and the Squire after being inspired by Batman and Robin . The Knight was in reality the Earl of Wordenshire, a small village in England. Whenever their services were needed, the bell at Wordenshire Village rectory was rang. The Knight joined forces several times with Batman and Robin, and other "Batmen of All Nations", and was a charter member of the Club of Heroes.
Post Crisis: Percival Sheldrake's father, the Earl of Wordenshire, was killed in North Africa during World War II. Soon thereafter, he and his mother were caught in a bombing raid while in London. His mother was killed but Percy was rescued by the All-Star Squadron and Seven Soldiers of Victory member, the Shining Knight. The Shining Knight took him under his wing as his new Squire. As the Squire (I), Percy, and several other young international heroes, teamed up with the Young All-Stars at the request of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Later in the war, Percy spent some time in a P.O.W. camp, and in the early 1950's, he and several other war patriots became some of the first costumed heroes to emerge outside of the United States. Taking the name the Knight, the Earl of Wordenshire and his son, the new Squire (II), came under the supervision of the newly formed Dome as one of the Global Guardians. The Knight fought crime in his native England. His son, Cyril, eventually became the new Knight (II).
